National Standards for Health Coaching

Establishing excellence, consistency, and accountability across the health coaching profession.

The National Health Coach Network has developed comprehensive standards for health coaching practice to ensure quality, consistency, and outcomes-driven care across the profession. These standards establish expectations for coaching competency, ethics, documentation, and professional accountability.

Five Pillars of NHCN Standards

1
Coaching Competency

Coaches must demonstrate mastery of evidence-based coaching methodologies, motivational interviewing, behavior change science, and health literacy principles through recognized training and certification programs.

2
Professional Ethics

Coaches must adhere to a strict code of ethics encompassing client confidentiality, informed consent, scope of practice, cultural competency, and professional boundaries to ensure safe, respectful, and effective coaching relationships.

3
Standardized Documentation

Coaches must maintain consistent, comprehensive documentation of coaching interactions, client goals, progress, and outcomes using standardized formats that support clinical integration and population health measurement.

4
Outcomes-Driven Practice

Coaches must track and report on health outcomes, engagement metrics, and program effectiveness to demonstrate impact, support evidence-based practice, and enable continuous quality improvement across the network.

5
Clinical Integration

Coaches must operate within integrated care teams, maintaining clear communication with clinical providers, respecting scope of practice boundaries, and contributing to coordinated, whole-person care delivery.
