Frequently Asked Questions
Can I renew early?
Yes! You may submit your renewal application up to 90 days before your credential expiration date. This allows you to renew early and avoid any lapse in your credential status.
What if my credential expires?
If your credential lapses, you must reapply for credentialing (not just renewal). The process takes 30-45 days and requires the full initial credentialing review including background checks. We recommend submitting your renewal before expiration to avoid any gap.
Do all CE hours count the same?
Most CE hours count equally. However, some high-value activities may count extra (e.g., specialty certifications, peer consultation hours). Contact NHCN if you're unsure whether a specific course qualifies or how many hours it's worth.
What if I don't meet the minimum caseload?
If you have fewer than 10 clients per year, contact NHCN before renewal. Conditional renewal with additional documentation may be possible. However, active coaching is a core credentialing principle, so significant caseload deficiency may result in renewal denial.
Can I apply for renewal if my license is expired?
No. All professional licenses must be current and in good standing at renewal. If your license is expired, renew it immediately and then submit your NHCN renewal application. An active license is a requirement for credentialing.
How much time should I allow for renewal?
We recommend allowing 30-60 days to prepare all materials: gathering CE certificates, compiling outcomes data, obtaining updated license/certification copies, and completing the application. Starting early prevents last-minute stress!
What happens if my renewal is denied?
You have the right to appeal a denial. NHCN will explain the reason, provide 30 days to file an appeal, and assign an independent Appeals Panel to review your case. You may also have the option of conditional renewal with remedial steps. Contact NHCN immediately if your renewal is denied to discuss options.
